I got called back for The Onion, the faux news network today. It was an excellent example of why it’s good to dress for a role that you’re called in for. They were looking for a black woman in the military. So I wore a black wife-beater and black training pants. They noticed, and seemed to take me seriously because I took the role seriously. Lesson of the day is dress for the part, but play against the expected actions. You think military, you think hard, gruff, no nonsense type people. But for the read they asked me to keep the look, but remain sweet, excited, and very human. It turned out being very funny.
Play against the expectations. Simplest way to leave a lasting impression.
